The final results are posted on Facebook as a PDF. There is one more week of swimming left. Next Thursday and Friday will be Time Trial Days.
There were to many swims to list on this page, but we broke a lot of 0's and 5's.

Tuesday August 7th starts Lady Tide Swimming. The incoming freshman class looks very tough, it is going to be a great school year for all of the Tide, high school and middle Tide.

If you did not get your new team bag see me ASAP. I also have team caps for $4.

Lets make this last week the best of the summer.

Thursday Night City Championship Meet

OK... At this time we are going with Thursday Night. This is also pending that the pool is running. Warm-up at 5pm Meet at 6pm. We will run it as a City Championship. I know not everyone who was originally signed up will be able to make it. I'm choosing evening because parents can watch and more workers are available. We will run it like a real meet. I will close the pool so there can be cool down. We will give out ribbons 1-5 individually.

We will still practice Thursday Morning.

We will do our annual Time Trial on August 2nd and 3rd. We will set up like a meet with electronic timing. So if you do not swim Thursday Night, you still have a chance to get a end of summer time.

Beloit Daily News Article

Posted: Thursday, July 19, 2012 4:00 pm
Dick Vogel can only grimace when he thinks what swimming in Beloit was like back in the early 2000s.
It was a time when swimmers were few and far between, almost non-existent in the Stateline.
“I remember those times,” said Vogel before pausing. “They weren’t good. I didn’t know if swimming was going to survive in Beloit. It didn’t look too good.”
But the view is much better these days.
And a lot of that stems from the creation of the Krueger Summer Swim Team back in 2006.
There were only 20 participants in the program’s inaugural year. But now the program is thriving with more than 170 participants in its sixth year.
There’s no doubt there’s been a shift in enthusiasm for swimming in the Stateline. There was no better evidence of that then during Wednesday’s practice when the Krueger pool area was almost full.
“We’re finally at a good point,” said Vogel, who is also the swimming coach for the Beloit Purple Tide boys team. “It’s getting crowded around here, but we’ll never turn anyone away. We want this to keep growing and growing. We’re starting to finally open up some eyes around here.”
The eyes got even bigger after the district approved a referendum in the winter that would help fund the building of a new pool slated to break ground in August.
There wasn’t even a thought of such a proposal six years ago.
“That just shows you how much things are changing and how people feel about swimming,” Vogel said.
A lot of the excitement stemmed from the middle schools creating a team in 2002.
Since then, residents in the Stateline have slowly made their way back to the pool.
“Swimming was dying around the community,” Vogel said. “I don’t want to knock the (Beloit Aquatic Team), but a lot of their swimmers are Illinois residents. A lot of people in Beloit weren’t swimming, which was bad for the middle school and high school teams.”
That’s why Vogel wanted to find a program that helped swimmers stay active during the summer.
What he found was the Krueger Swim Team.
But matters didn’t start smoothly.
So, Vogel and his staff had to get out and recruit.
And recruit. And recruit.
“The first thing we had to do was make swimming affordable,” Vogel said. “Then, we wanted to make it a community-based program. Once we figured those things out, then we went out and recruited really, really hard. It took a lot of work, but we’re finally getting to where we want to be.”
The cost to join the club is $80 for children 10-and-under and $90 for everyone else.
The program has five different classes, ranging from 8-under to 9-10, 11-12, 13-14 and 15-and-over. The program is 9:30-10:30 a.m. Monday-Friday.
The numbers have also rose in the 8-under group with 40 kids signed up for this year’s program.
“It helps for everything,” said Andre DeKok, who co-coaches the program along with Vogel. “Sharpness, endurance, flexibility and speed.”
There’s also yoga and P90X classes before swimming practice, taught by volunteer coaches.
The club is open to any swimmer, no matter the age. Besides participants from Beloit, the club also includes swimmers from South Beloit, Clinton, Rockton and Roscoe.
“The whole intent of the club is to be mostly Beloit-based,” Vogel said. “We’ll take anyone we can get, but we’d love it if our middle school and high school students to came out and gave it a try. Usually, when they do that, they stick with us.”
One example was Londell and Ledell Bland.
After failing to make the Beloit Memorial boys basketball team, the brothers jumped in the pool.
They haven’t gotten out since.
“You know, everyone thinks they’re Basketball Jones, but they try out and realize maybe they’re not suited for basketball,” Vogel said. “We want those kids to think of us. Any time they want to change sports and start swimming, we’ll always be an available option.”
The Krueger Swim Team competes in three meets during the summer. They’ll host a meet at Krueger Pool next week when they participate in the McGuire Dual Meet.
With the new pool set to be installed this year, Vogel also wants to host a couple of middle school boys and girls meets.
That statement seemed impossible six years ago.
But impossible is turning into possible.
“Swimming is becoming cool again,” Vogel said.

Purple Tide Boys NISCA Top 25

NISCA National Dual Meet Rankings came out today. For Class 3 Public Schools 1401-1900 Students, Purple Tide Boys were Ranked 25th in the Nation for schools our size. The Purple Tide scored 3892 points. Class 3 Champions was Upper Arlington High in Ohio. Other Schools in Wisconsin Ranked in this class were Appleton North 18th (Head Coach Scott Stepanski is former swimmer of Coach Vogel), Manitowoc Lincoln 26th (Coach Vogel's Alum). Overall National Champion in all Divisions was New Trier High School, Winnetka IL.

Teams put their best dual meet line-up together and they are scored by the NISCA Power Point System.

Because of our great championship season we had a great power point score. With the team we have returning this year we should increase the score and ranking in a big way. Set your goals high, we can do this.

This is the Purple Tide's first top 25 ranking since 2005. Go TIDE!!

Making Practice Effective

Tips for making your practice more effective

These are just some ideas for making practice more effective, so that you don’t waste hours (taking longer to become an expert), but the list is by no means complete:
  • Review your performances, good and bad(I now I keep saying this, and I will keep saying it!)
  • From that, keep working to make your strengths stronger
  • Turn areas for development into training goals, linked to your performance goals
  • Seek every opportunity for feedback – from your coach especially, but others too (being mindful of the possibility of conflicting advice)
  • Use video – if you have access to video analysis, use that as often as possible, but at the very least have someone record races for you to watch
  • Keep and look back at information about your swims – build your ‘database’, monitor your progress and look for patterns in your performance
  • Become a ‘student’ of swimming and take more responsibility for decisions about your training (offer solutions to your coach, not just problems)
  • Know why you are doing what you are doing. If you are working on aerobic development, you know that taking extra rest simply diminishes the value of the set, whereas skipping rest can diminish the value of a speed set
  • Focus on the detail. Just how far off the wall are you kicking? Where exactly is your hand catching the water? What were your actual times / HR for the set?
If you have tips of your own, if not to break the 10000 hour rule, to make more efficient and effective use of your ‘deliberate practice’, please share them as a comment.

Great Read

Innovation for Endurance · Ryan Lochte on How to Become an Olympian
posted July 7, 2012 by Team Lochte

We recently asked the Innovation for Endurance community to send their questions to world-record-holding swimmer Ryan

Lochte — here’s the question Ryan chose to answer:

Q: What would you say to a young age-group swimmer about the long haul with the ultimate goal of being an Olympian? — Sara James

Ryan Lochte: It’s not an easy road. To become an Olympian you must put in hours, days, and years of hard work. There will be many disappointments, but you cannot look back. Just learn from mistakes and realize that everyone loses at some point in their lives, but to be a true winner you must understand that losing is a part of winning. I spent years losing, winning, losing & winning. But I never gave up and I believed that one day I would become the Best Swimmer in the World. You MUST believe it.

If you lose, don’t get down, but get stronger! Let your losses and failures make you better. A loss is only a temporary setback, but if you let a loss, or even several losses, drive you to quit, then you have lost forever. Most important, you must love what you are doing and have fun because all the wins in the world and all the money in the world will not make you happy in this sport unless you are having fun! I am successful because, above all else, I love this sport and it is fun to me. I don’t always love the hard work, but when that hard work pays off it is worth all the blood, sweat, and tears leading up to competition. You can do it!

I think there are 10 steps to becoming an Olympic Swimmer:

LOVE IT.
BELIEVE IT.
WORK HARD.
NEVER GIVE UP.
ACCEPT THAT LOSING IS A PART OF WINNING.
LEARN FROM YOUR LOSSES.
LISTEN TO YOUR COACHES, AND MAKE SURE THAT YOU HAVE A COACH WHO BELIEVES IN YOU.
BE CONFIDENT.
NEVER LET ANYONE TELL YOU THAT YOU CAN’T.
HAVE FUN!!!!
—Ryan Lochte, World-record-holding Swimmer
