Another Great Mentor Passes

Jim Davies, WISCA founding member, passes away
Sep 04 2013
It's with sadness that we pass along the news of the death of Jim Davies, a founding member of WISCA and former swim coach at Janesville and UW-Oshkosh. Davies, a native of Janesville, died Sunday in Oshkosh; he was 87.

His Janesville boys swim teams (before the district created two high schools in Craig and Parker) won state titles in 1955 and 1961. He coached a number of swimmers who went on to become high school swim coaches, including former Waukesha South head coach Greg Hollub and current Beloit Memorial head coach Richard Vogel.

He helped found WISCA -- the statewide association for the state's high school swim coaches -- and was inducted into the WISCA Hall of Fame in 1996. He was also a member of the Janesville Sports Hall of Fame.

He also coached at UW-Oshkosh from 1967-78, and was also a member of the Oshkosh Sports Hall of Fame. Our condolences go out to his family.

Sometimes life is hard. In 6 weeks I have lost both of my greatest coaching mentors.
